Southampton manager Russell Martin has praised striker Paul Onuachu for his outstanding performance in the 3-2 loss to Liverpool on Sunday.
Onuachu made his first start of the season and was a constant threat to the Liverpool defense, particularly with his impressive link-up play.
The game could have gone either way, with Southampton showing great resilience, and eventually denied by a late Mohamed Salah penalty.
Onuachu fought and held off the likes of Ibrahima Konate, and Virgil van Dijk on several occasions, but his impressive display was cut short when he was forced off the pitch after 52 minutes due to an injury. Martin is hopeful that the injury is not too serious.
“Paul probably deserved to start before now, the way he’s trained – he’s been so good.
“He was really good so I hope his injury is nothing too serious.
“It’s just a bit of fatigue but I thought he played really, really well,” Martin said after the game.
Onuachu has made six league appearances for Southampton this season and is yet to open his account.
