Bayer Leverkusen secured a 3-1 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach at the BayArena, with Florian Wirtz delivering an outstanding performance by scoring twice and providing an assist.
The match began on a concerning note for Leverkusen as forward Martin Terrier suffered a severe ankle injury in the ninth minute, leading to his substitution. Reports indicate a possible Achilles tendon rupture, which could sideline him for an extended period.
Despite the early disruption, Leverkusen found their rhythm, largely thanks to Florian Wirtz. In the 32nd minute, Wirtz received a pass from Granit Xhaka, skillfully evaded defender Ko Itakura, and calmly finished to give Leverkusen the lead.
Leverkusen continued to press in the second half. In the 62nd minute, Wirtz was fouled in the box, earning a penalty, which he converted to double the lead. Twelve minutes later, Wirtz turned provider, assisting Patrik Schick for Leverkusen’s third goal, effectively sealing the match.
Borussia Mönchengladbach managed to pull one back in stoppage time through Tim Kleindienst, but it was too late to influence the outcome.
This victory marks Leverkusen’s 12th consecutive win, keeping them four points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich, who also won their match against VfL Wolfsburg. Leverkusen’s consistent form under coach Xabi Alonso continues to apply pressure on Bayern in the title race.
Leverkusen will now shift their focus to the Champions League, as they prepare to face Atlético Madrid on Tuesday.
