The road to continental glory has officially begun for the participating nations of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket, as the official draw for the tournament took place in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, on Wednesday.
Among the headlines from the event is Nigeria’s D’Tigress being drawn into a competitive group that will test the reigning champions’ mettle as they seek to defend their crown and further cement their dominance in African women’s basketball.
D’Tigress, the powerhouse of African women’s basketball and four-time consecutive AfroBasket champions (2017, 2019, 2021, 2023), have been placed in Group D alongside Mozambique and Rwanda.

Twelve teams were split into four groups of three:
Group A: Côte d’Ivoire, Angola, Egypt
Group B: Mali, Cameroon, South Sudan
Group C: Senegal, Uganda, Guinea
Group D: Nigeria, Mozambique, Rwanda
The Nigerian team, coached by Rena Wakama—the first female head coach to win an AfroBasket title—are widely tipped to extend their winning streak and aim for a historic fifth consecutive title.
As hosts, Côte d’Ivoire were drawn into Group A. According to the competition format, the top team from each group will advance directly to the quarter-finals.
The second- and third-placed teams will face off in a qualification round, with the winners moving on to complete the final eight.
The stage is now set for another exciting edition of Africa’s premier women’s basketball championship.
The tournament, set to run from July 26 to August 3, will be hosted at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
