Mfon Udoka is a Nigerian-American former professional basketball player and coach who has left a significant mark on the sport both on and off the court.
Born on June 16, 1976, in Portland, Oregon, Udoka’s athletic journey is deeply rooted in her Nigerian heritage and American upbringing.
She attended Benson Polytechnic High School before enrolling at DePaul University in Chicago, where she starred for the Blue Demons from 1994 to 1998.
During her college career, she was known for her rebounding prowess, defensive intensity, and leadership, finishing her collegiate stint as one of DePaul’s all-time leaders in scoring and rebounding.
After going undrafted in the WNBA, Mfon Udoka embarked on an extensive professional career that spanned several countries.
She played in Portugal, Israel, Russia, and China, showcasing her adaptability and skill in various competitive environments. Her persistence paid off when she broke into the WNBA, first signing with the Detroit Shock in 2003.
She later played for the Houston Comets and Los Angeles Sparks, proving her mettle among the elite women’s basketball players in the world. Known for her physicality, rebounding, and tenacity, Udoka built a reputation as a dependable forward who brought energy and commitment to every game.
In addition to her professional club career, Mfon Udoka was a key figure in Nigerian women’s basketball. She captained the Nigerian national team, D’Tigress, and led them to their historic appearance at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.
The team made headlines as the first African women’s basketball team to win a game at the Olympics, defeating South Korea in a stunning upset. Udoka’s leadership and veteran presence were instrumental in this landmark achievement for Nigerian sports.

She served as an assistant coach and also held the position of assistant general manager for Nigeria’s national team, contributing to the development of basketball in the country.
