Lyle Foster says Bafana Bafana will approach Tuesday night’s crunch 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Nigeria without any fear or pressure, despite the high stakes at the Free State Stadium.
The Burnley striker, who recently marked his birthday in camp, believes South Africa’s position at the top of Group C gives them an edge in confidence. Bafana lead the group with 16 points from seven matches, while Nigeria sit third on 10 points.
“I don’t necessarily think there’s pressure on us,” Foster said. “At the moment we are where we want to be in the group, and that’s a positive. The pressure is on those who are trying to catch us, but that doesn’t mean we should relax. We have to keep the same mentality, stay focused and humble.”
The match is expected to draw a packed crowd in Bloemfontein as one of Africa’s fiercest football rivalries resumes. Nigeria, who were held in their last outing, are desperate for a result to revive their qualification campaign, while Hugo Broos’ side will look to consolidate their lead and edge closer to a first World Cup appearance since 2010.
