Nigeria international defender Benjamin Fredrick has been promoted to Brentford’s first-team squad ahead of the 2026/27 Premier League season after signing a new four-year contract with the club.
The new deal, which includes an option for an additional year, marks another major milestone in the 21-year-old’s rapid rise since arriving at the West London club in 2023.
Brentford head coach Keith Andrews expressed his delight at Fredrick’s progression, describing the defender as a player with significant potential.
“We’re delighted that Benji has signed a new deal and is going to be part of the group this season because we see a lot of potential in him,” Andrews said.
The coach also praised Fredrick’s international experience with Nigeria and highlighted his productive loan spell at Belgian side FCV Dender before a knee injury prematurely ended his season.
Andrews added that the immediate priority is helping the defender fully reintegrate into the squad after spending several months on the sidelines.
Fredrick’s football journey began at Simoiben Football Academy in Kaduna before spells with Abubakar Bukola Saraki FC and Nigeria Premier Football League side Nasarawa United.
He joined Brentford B on loan in August 2023 and impressed enough for the club to make the move permanent in April 2024. During his time with the B team, he helped Brentford reach the Premier League Cup final and win the Under-21 Professional Development League national title. His performances also earned him the Brentford B Players’ Player of the Year award in May 2025.

The defender continued his development with a loan move to Belgian Pro League side FCV Dender for the 2025/26 campaign, making 15 appearances before injury brought his spell to an early end.
On the international stage, Fredrick made his senior debut for the Super Eagles in the Unity Cup final against Jamaica in May 2025. He later established himself as a regular starter during Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, featuring in the final four qualifying matches and the African World Cup play-offs.
Brentford B head coach Sam Saunders hailed Fredrick’s development, describing him as a brave, coachable player with outstanding defensive qualities.
“Benji has been an absolute pleasure to have. I’m really proud of his progression and the levels he has reached during his time at Brentford,” Saunders said.
Speaking after signing his new contract, Fredrick admitted the move was a proud moment for both himself and his family.
“It’s a great feeling. I’m happy and proud of myself, and my family are proud of me as well,” he said.
The Nigerian defender also credited former Brentford B boss Neil MacFarlane for helping him settle in England and develop both on and off the pitch.
Looking ahead to the new season, Fredrick set his sights on making his Premier League debut.
“I just want to keep pushing and learning every single day. My aim is to make my debut with the first team, get Premier League minutes and give my best when I have the opportunity,” he said.
