Osasuna Upsets Real Madrid as Atlético Storms Past Espanyol: LaLiga Round-Up

LaLiga delivered a thrilling Saturday of football during the match day 25 encounters which saw a defeat from Real Madrid

In one of the biggest surprises of the season, CA Osasuna stunned Real Madrid 2-1 at El Sadar to blow open the title race, while Real Betis and Rayo Vallecano played out an entertaining 1-1 draw. Later in the evening.

The results leave the championship picture more intriguing than ever and shift momentum across the table as teams jostle for top-four spots and survival in Spain’s top flight.

In Pamplona, Osasuna provided one of the biggest shocks of the season against the reigning champions. The hosts drew first blood in the 34th minute when a VAR-awarded penalty was coolly converted by Ante Budimir, leaving Real Madrid chasing the game early. Madrid grew into the contest and were rewarded when Vinícius Júnior clinically finished in the 73rd minute to level, setting up a tense finale. However, in stoppage time, Osasuna struck again Raul Garcia broke swiftly on the counter, slipping a composed finish beyond the keeper to spark wild celebrations and leave the league leaders stunned.

Real Madrid’s hot streak hit a speed bump, and despite dominating large spells, including several key chances by Kylian Mbappé that went begging,  it was Osasuna’s resolute defence and late punch that stole the headlines. The result tightens the title race with Barcelona able to pounce at the summit.

Laliga match: Atletico Madrid vs Espanyo

Atlético Madrid 4-2 Espanyol

At the Estadio Metropolitano, Atlético asserted themselves with a free-flowing attacking display. Jofre Carreras gave visitors Espanyol the lead early in the 6th minute, finishing crisply following a quick break that caught the home defence flat-footed. Rather than panic, Atlético responded in emphatic fashion.

Alexander Sørloth drew Atlético level in the 21st minute with a powerful downward header from close range. The hosts then turned the contest on its head after the interval when Giuliano Simeone put them ahead in the 49th minute with a composed finish from the edge of the box. Ademola Lookman added further gloss to the scoreline in the 58th minute, cutting inside before drilling low into the bottom corner for 3-1.

Espanyol briefly threatened a comeback midway through the second half, but Atlético’s quality in transition proved decisive. An added-time flourish sealed the scoring and left Atlético’s fans celebrating a memorable afternoon.

Real Sociedad 3-3 Real Oviedo

In what proved to be the most unpredictable match of the day, Real Sociedad and Real Oviedo served up a breathtaking clash at the Reale Arena. After a scrappy first half, Real Oviedo shocked the hosts by storming into a 50th- and 52nd-minute double from Federico Viñas, with both finishes taken with deadly precision to put the underdogs 2-0 ahead.

Real Sociedad responded with ruthless intent. Orri Óskarsson pulled one back in the 64th minute, and centre-back Duje Caleta-Car nodded home in the 87th, igniting hopes of a comeback. Óskarsson struck again in the 90th minute to seemingly complete the turnaround. But the drama wasn’t done,  in 90+2, veteran Eric Bailly powered home a late equaliser for Oviedo, sealing an unforgettable 3-3 draw and a priceless point for the visitors.

Real Betis 1–1 Rayo Vallecano

Earlier in Seville, Real Betis and Rayo Vallecano served up an end-to-end battle at the Estadio Benito Villamarín.

Real Betis drew first blood when Cédric Bakambu curled in a neat finish in the 16th minute, giving the home side the early advantage. But Rayo responded well, and Isi Palazón drew his team level in the 42nd minute with a clever strike that left the keeper wrong-footed.

Both teams pressed for a winner in the second half, trading half-chances and late set-piece opportunities, but neither could find that decisive touch. The draw keeps Betis firmly in European contention, while Rayo’s resilient display earns them a valuable point on the road
