Defensive Excellence

Portugal’s Nuno Mendes once again demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the finest full-backs in world football. Equally effective in attack and defence, the dynamic left-back constantly stretched opponents with his overlapping runs while remaining disciplined when tracking back, scored a freekick goal against Uzbekistan

At the heart of Spain’s defence, teenage sensation Pau Cubarsí continued to impress with performances far beyond his years. Calm under pressure, dominant in duels, and exceptional in possession, the young centre-back has quickly become one of the revelations of the tournament.

Then we have Van Heck, whose commanding displays anchored the Netherlands’ defence throughout the group stage. Strong in the air, composed in possession, and excellent at reading the game, the Dutch centre-back played an important role in his nation’s impressive defensive record while helping build attacks from the back.

On the opposite flank, Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi delivered another masterclass in modern wing-back play. Brazil’s Bruno Guimarães has quietly been one of the tournament’s most influential midfielders. His ability to dictate possession, break up attacks, and connect defence with attack has provided Brazil with balance and control throughout the group stage.

Guimaraes is a key difference between Brazil opening match against Morocco and their remaining 2 group stage matches.

France’s Ousmane Dembélé rediscovered his devastating best, using his pace and unpredictable dribbling to torment defenders. Whether creating opportunities or finishing them himself, his directness has been a key component of France’s attacking dominance.

Against Norway, Dembele scored a hattrick, making him just the third player to score a hattrick in this tournament

Alongside him, England’s Jude Bellingham continued to underline why he is considered one of football’s brightest talents. Mixing  physicality, technical quality, and remarkable maturity, the Real Madrid midfielder delivered decisive performances that inspired England through difficult moments.

He got the man of the match award in an extensive encounter against Ghana, and found the back of the net vs Panama.

A Star-Studded Front Three

France captain Kylian Mbappé has once again proven that the World Cup is his stage. Aside from his leadership responsibilities, he has ensured that France is a team to fear in this tournament.

En route to breaking Messi’s record for the most World Cup goal scored ever, he has scored a brace in two of his 3 matches in the group stage, and only two goal shy of Messi who tops the 2026 Goalscoring chart.

Completing the attack is a familiar name who continues to defy time itself; Lionel Messi. Even in the twilight of his illustrious career, the Argentine icon has continued to produce moments of extraordinary quality.
