Vinicius Jr has signed a new six-year contract with Real Madrid, tying him to the club until June 30, 2032. Real Madrid confirmed the deal on Thursday, closing the book on months of uncertainty over the Brazilian winger’s future.
Arsenal had emerged as a genuine threat to hijack the situation. The Premier League champions monitored Vinicius closely as he entered the final year of his previous contract, and they positioned themselves as a serious destination if talks with Madrid collapsed.
Vinicius Jr. finally put pen to paper after several weeks of negotiation as the Brazilian forward demanded a significant increase in salary.
He reportedly rejected a €22 milliona year deal earlier this week with his representatives demanding a fee closer to what Mbappe earns.
Madrid eventually raised their offer to around $25 million a year, still short of the $34 million Vinicius’ representatives reportedly wanted.
Fabrizio Romano reported Wednesday that talks had progressed to their final stages, with a verbal agreement close to completion.
Real Madrid and Vinicius’ camp used the following day to finalize paperwork before confirming the six-year extension.
Vinicius has has been instrumental since joining Real Madrid from Flamengo in 2018. He has made 375 appearances for the club, scored 128 goals, and won 14 trophies, including two Champions League titles, three Club World Cups, and three La Liga titles.
His goals in the 2022 and 2024 Champions League finals stand among his biggest contributions to Madrid’s recent European dominance. He also won The Best FIFA Men’s Player award in 2024 and picked up the Golden Ball at that year’s Intercontinental Cup.
Meanwhile, Arsenal will now turn their attention elsewhere in the transfer market. Real Madrid, meanwhile, secure their brightest attacking talent for the long term as they build a squad they hope can extend their run of continental success.
