Eric Chelle’s side held their first training session in Uyo under the floodlights as preparations for Friday’s AFCON 2027 qualifier got underway
The Super Eagles of Nigeria have stepped up preparations for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, holding their first training session in Uyo on Tuesday night ahead of Friday’s clash with Madagascar.
Eric Chelle and his technical crew took 23 players through a light evening session at the training pitch of the Godswill Akpabio Stadium as the squad continued to assemble ahead of the Group L opener.
With several players arriving in camp after long journeys from their respective clubs, the session was largely focused on recovery, movement and regaining physical sharpness rather than intensive tactical work.
The players worked through a series of exercises involving agility ladders, cones and hurdles, with the drills designed to improve coordination, balance, footwork and mobility.
Among those involved were forwards Moses Simon, Akor Adams, Taiwo Awoniyi, Moses Usor and George Ilenikhena, while first-time invitee Isaac James also took part in the session.
Goalkeepers Arthur Okonkwo and Stanley Nwabali were also involved.
The experienced core of the squad was represented by Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, Ola Aina, Semi Ajayi and Calvin Bassey.
Bright Osayi-Samuel, Bruno Onyemaechi, Raphael Onyedika, Frank Onyeka, Chibuike Nwaiwu and Tolu Arokodare were also part of the workout, alongside defenders Benjamin Frederick and Emmanuel Fernandez.
The first session gives Chelle and his technical team an opportunity to assess the players physically as preparations begin for what will be Nigeria’s first competitive match since their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign ended.
The intensity of the preparations is expected to increase as matchday approaches, with Nigeria having limited time to work on their tactical approach and build understanding within a squad that includes several new faces.
The Super Eagles will face a Madagascar side that reached the CHAN final earlier this year, making Friday’s encounter an important opening fixture in the race for AFCON 2027 qualification.
Nigeria host Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Friday, September 25, kick-off is scheduled for 4pm Nigerian time.
