Abbey George: From Sharks to Stardom! Background, Career and Net Worth of former Super Eagles defender

Abbey George is a former professional football player who featured for the Super Eagles of Nigeria and a couple of clubs in England and Cyprus during his active days. George played as a central defender, and a right-back for the national team, and the club sides he played for.

Like many other Nigerian footballers of his generation. He started his career in the Nigeria Premier Football League with the defunct Sharks of Port Harcourt which is now known as Rivers United, before he moved to Europe.

The defender had a brief spell with the Super Eagles but had a memorable outing at the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia as he helped the team to a third-place finish, as he featured in all six matches in the competition.

He spent thirteen years in Europe as he featured for four clubs in England and Cyprus before ending his career in 2011. Abbey George is now a fitness trainer and a football coach after retiring from football.

Given his caucasian complexion, one would think the defender was born in Europe. However that is not the case, interestingly. Abbey George was born to a Welsh mother and Nigerian father in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, south-south region of Nigeria. The defender grew up in the city and was close to former Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo before the duo moved abroad in the early 2000s.

Former Super Eagles defender is currently 46-years-old. He was born on 20 October 1978 in Port Harcourt.

Being a right-back predominatly, Abbey George has a decent height. The former Super Eagles defender is 5 ft 8 inches tall.

Career Trajectory

Abbey George started his football career with the youth team of Sharks Football Club. He played for the youth set of the now defunct club for three years between 1996 and 1999. Abbey George moved to Macclesfield Town in 1999 under former manager Sammy Mcllory. George scored his first goal for the club in a 3-2 win over Shrewsbury Town in the Football League on 15 April 2003. Abbey George played significant role as he helped the team aviod relegation on two occasions during his four-year stint at the club. He played 117 times before he was released after the 2003/2004 football campiagn.

After speculations about him joining a Premier League side, Abbey Geeorge joined aother League 1 side, Port Vale in December 2004. He featured 71 times helping the team beat relagation in his first season at the club. Abbey George scored his only goal for Port Vale in a 2-1 defeat to Crewe Alexandra on 4 November, 2006 before he was released at the end of the season.

Abbey George joined Crewe Alexandra at the end of July 2007. He featured 23 times for the “Railwaymen” in 2007–08 season, and signed a two-year deal at the end of the season. Unfortunately, he played just seven times for new boss Guðjón Þórðarson, and agreed to the termination of his contract in May 2009.

George underwent a trial at Tranmere Rovers, and featured in pre-season friendlies against Cammell Laird, Preston North End and Liverpool. However, due to Tranmere Rovers financial situations, they were unable to offer him a permanent deal.

He joined Akritas Chlorakas in the Cypriot Second Division in 2010. He stayed for the 2010–11 season before he retired to become a from football to become a fitness trainer and then a football coach.

Super Eagles and AFCON 2004

He was part of late Christian Chukwu’s Super Eagles team that won bronze at the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia. He played all six matches incluin the third place playoff as the Super Eagles defeated Mali 2-1. He featured 18 times for the Super Eagles between 2003 and 2007.

Abbey George net worth

The ex-Super Eagles defender played for just four clubs iin his professional career earning salaries and other entitlements. Abbey George’s estimated net worth is somewaht difficuult to assume but the former footballer is living quite a comfortable life with his kids in Cheshire, England.
