Augustine Eguavoen says he did not lobby for the Super Eagles job after the Bruno Labbadia saga, as Nigeria prepares for AFCON 2025 qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda.

Augustine Eguavoen, the caretaker coach of the Super Eagles, has declared unequivocally that he did not advocate for his appointment as the temporary head coach of Nigeria’s national team.

Eguavoen is set to take charge of the Super Eagles in their AFCON 2025 qualification matches against Rwanda and the Benin Republic.

He emphasized that his nomination was a result of God’s favor when discussing it on the Super Eagles’ official channels following his recent appointment.

Eguavoen on God’s Favour

In a video on the official Super Eagles X account, he said, “I am a member of the Federation, working as the Technical Director Nigerian Football Federation.

“When a situation like this comes and you are being called upon, you can’t say no. It’s a task that I had performed; it is a duty that falls under my responsibility.

“For the fact that the hierarchy of the Federation now feels and thinks that I can salvage the situation, why not?

“But one thing should be clear to the public: I didn’t ask for this; I didn’t lobby for this, I didn’t apply for this; it is God’s favour.”

Eguavoen leads Super Eagles’ training

Photos of the former Super Eagles captain leading the training sessions have gone viral on social media.

In addition, Eguavoen urged the players to demonstrate their value as Nigeria gets ready for the 2025 (AFCON) qualifiers on Saturday.

Nigeria will play Benin at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo and then fly to Kigali to play Rwanda three days later.

The Super Eagles have only won one of four games since the conclusion of the AFCON in the Ivory Coast,

They drew 1-1 with South Africa in Uyo when the FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifications resumed, then they fell 2-1 to Benin in their next match.

They now have a rematch against the Cheetahs this weekend which offers a chance at redemption.
