Alex Iwobi set to break Ahmed Musa’s record ahead of Portugal friendly

Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi is on the verge of breaking Ahmed Musa’s Nigerian record when the Super Eagles take on Portugal in a high-profile international friendly on Wednesday.

Alex Iwobi currently has 99 international caps and is set to join an elite group of Nigerian footballers, Joseph Yobo and Vincent Enyeama who have reached the 100-cap milestone.

If he features for even a single minute against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal side on June 10, he will become only the fourth Nigerian player to hit the landmark, following Joseph Yobo, Vincent Enyeama, and Ahmed Musa.

More importantly, the match gives Iwobi the chance to become the fastest player in Nigeria’s history to reach 100 caps. If he plays, he will achieve the feat in 10 years and 245 days since his senior debut — surpassing Musa’s record.

The Hale End Academy graduate made his senior debut for Nigeria in a friendly against the Democratic Republic of Congo on October 8, 2015. He earned his 99th cap in his most recent outing against Jordan, a game in which he was sent off in the closing stages.

Ahmed Musa currently holds the record as the fastest Nigerian to reach 100 appearances. He hit the milestone during a World Cup qualifier against the Central African Republic on 10 October 2021, just 11 years and 35 days after his debut against Madagascar.
