Arsenal, Wolves cruise into the FA Cup fifth round as Grimsby face a late cup exit

Arsenal humbled lower league side, Athletic Wigan 4:0 to reach the fifth round of the FA Cup, while relegation-threatened Premier League side Wolves went past Grimsby in a muddy field.

Several teams were pushed into difficult contests, forced to rely on patience, defensive discipline, and moments of individual quality. While some favourites progressed with authority, others had to dig deep to survive stern challenges from determined opposition.

Here is a report of what happened in the FA Cup on Sunday.

Leeds Hold Their Nerve Against Birmingham

Leeds United progressed after a tense 1–1 draw with Birmingham City, eventually prevailing via penalties.

Leeds appeared to seize control when Lukas Nmecha broke the deadlock, but Birmingham responded with determination, Patrick Roberts delivering a late equaliser that reignited the contest. The remainder of the tie became a test of composure rather than creativity.

In the shoot-out, Leeds goalkeeper Lucas Perri emerged as the decisive figure, producing a crucial save before Sean Longstaff converted the penalty that sealed progression.

Wolves Survive Difficult Trip to Grimsby

FA cup match

Wolverhampton Wanderers secured a narrow 1–0 victory over Grimsby Town in challenging conditions.

On a pitch that disrupted rhythm and fluidity, Wolves were forced into a contest defined by grit rather than style. Santiago Bueno’s second-half strike proved decisive in a match where clear chances were limited.

Despite Grimsby’s fighting spirit, Wolves managed the closing stages effectively to advance.

Sunderland Edge Oxford in Tight Encounter

Sunderland booked their place in the fifth round with a 1–0 win against Oxford United.

A first-half penalty from Habib Diarra ultimately separated the sides in a tightly contested affair. Oxford remained competitive throughout but struggled to convert pressure into clear scoring opportunities.

Sunderland’s defensive discipline ensured their slender advantage held.

Fulham Claim Hard-Fearned Win at Stoke

Fulham emerged with a 2–1 victory over Stoke City following a competitive battle.

After Stoke’s early breakthrough, Fulham responded with improved attacking intent. Harrison Reed’s decisive goal completed the turnaround, rewarding Fulham’s persistence and control in the latter stages. The victory keeps Fulham’s cup ambitions intact.

Arsenal Cruise with Early Blitz

Arsenal delivered the day’s most commanding performance, dismantling Wigan Athletic 4–0.

Goals from Noni Madueke, Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus, alongside an own goal, established control early and effectively ended the contest before halftime. Arsenal’s attacking sharpness and tempo proved overwhelming.
