Arsenal Pull Nine Points Clear as City Stumble: Three Lessons from the Weekend

The Premier League title race shifted significantly this weekend as Arsenal extended their lead at the top to nine points, capitalising on another slip-up from defending champions Manchester City.

While the Gunners marched on, the battle for Champions League places and the scrap at the bottom both saw dramatic results that could define the final stretch of the 2025–26 campaign.

Here are three key takeaways from the weekend’s action:

1. Arsenal’s Mental Fortitude Is the Difference-Maker

Fans have often questioned Arsenal’s ability to handle the pressure and overcome previous struggles, but Saturday’s 2-0 win over Everton at the Emirates gave a definitive answer.

It wasn’t just the result, but the late nature of relying on an 89th-minute breakthrough from Viktor Gyökeres and a stoppage-time sealer from 16-year-old sensation Max Dowman.

Mikel Arteta’s side has now built a nine-point buffer with only eight games remaining for most, making the title firmly theirs to lose.

2. Manchester City’s Season Is at Risk of Unravelling

While Arsenal find ways to win, Manchester City are finding ways to drop points. A 1-1 draw at West Ham on Saturday followed a string of uncharacteristic performances, leaving Pep Guardiola’s side trailing by a massive margin.

Despite taking the lead through Bernardo Silva, City were pegged back by a Konstantinos Mavropanos equaliser. The result not only dented City’s title hopes but helped West Ham climb out of the relegation zone.

3. Manchester United Seize the Initiative in the Top-Four Race

With Chelsea and Liverpool both dropping points, Manchester United emerged as the weekend’s big winners in the hunt for Champions League football. Michael Carrick’s side delivered a professional 3-1 victory over top-four rivals Aston Villa at Old Trafford.

The win, necessitated by goals from Casemiro, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Šeško, moved United three points clear in third place. The result was made sweeter by results elsewhere: Newcastle United beat Chelsea 1-0at Stamford Bridge, and Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw by Tottenham.
