Arsenal remember iconic Kanu hat-trick against Chelsea

Arsenal have today paid tribute to one of the most iconic performances in Premier League history – Nwankwo Kanu’s unforgettable hat-trick against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The Nigerian forward etched his name into Arsenal folklore on October 23, 1999, when he turned a 2-0 deficit into a stunning 3-2 victory in just 15 thrilling minutes, silencing the home crowd and sending Gunners fans into delirium.

In a social media tribute posted earlier today, Arsenal shared vintage footage of the hat-trick with the caption: “MW 13. 2 goals down. 75 minutes gone. Up steps Kanu.”

The video has already garnered hundreds of thousands of views and reignited memories of one of the Premier League’s most dramatic turnarounds.

The game saw Arsenal trailing 2-0, with Chelsea goals from Tore André Flo and Dan Petrescu seemingly sealing the win. But Kanu had other ideas.

With just 15 minutes left on the clock, he netted three times — the third a sensational finish from a tight angle near the byline — to complete one of the most dramatic comebacks in league history.

That third goal, in particular, remains a staple of highlight reels — as Kanu danced past Chelsea keeper Ed de Goey and two defenders before unleashing a curling shot that defied physics and logic.

Now, over two decades later, the memory still burns brightly in the minds of Arsenal supporters. The club’s tribute serves not only as a nod to an incredible individual display but also as a celebration of Kanu’s overall contribution — 44 goals in 198 appearances and countless moments of joy.
