Nigeria international goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is set to join English Championship club Charlton Athletic on a season-long loan from Wrexham.
According to Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Charlton have agreed a deal with Wrexham for the 24-year-old goalkeeper, who is expected to move in search of regular first-team football.
Okonkwo has just one year remaining on his Wrexham contract and is expected to become a free agent next summer. The loan move will give him an opportunity to regain his place as a first-choice goalkeeper after falling down the pecking order at Wrexham.
The Nigerian initially joined Wrexham on loan from Arsenal in September 2023 and quickly established himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper. He played a key role as the Welsh club secured back-to-back promotions, rising from League Two to the Championship.
Wrexham subsequently made his move permanent in June 2024 after his Arsenal contract expired, handing him a three-year deal.

However, Okonkwo’s position changed following Wrexham’s decision to sign Anthony Patterson from Sunderland in a club-record transfer reportedly worth around £8 million. With experienced goalkeeper Danny Ward also at the club, Okonkwo became the third-choice option.
He had been linked with loan moves to Derby County and Bolton Wanderers earlier in the summer, although reports suggested that his wages, believed to be around £1 million per year, had complicated negotiations.
Charlton have now reached an agreement to take the goalkeeper on loan for the 2026/27 season.
Okonkwo came through Arsenal’s academy and gained senior experience during loan spells at Crewe Alexandra and Austrian club Sturm Graz before his breakthrough at Wrexham.
Across his loan and permanent spells with Wrexham, he has made more than 100 appearances and played a significant role in the club’s two successive promotions.
At international level, Okonkwo switched allegiance from England to Nigeria and received his first senior call-up for the Super Eagles. He made his senior debut during the 2026 Unity Cup, keeping goal in Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe and 3-0 win against Jamaica.
The move to Charlton is expected to provide Okonkwo with the regular playing time needed to continue his development and strengthen his position in the Super Eagles setup.
