Aston Villa secured their first Premier League win of the season, beating Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 away on Saturday’s tea break kick-off to extend the misery of the Lilywhites.
Unai Emery’s side broke the deadlock right on half-time, when Johan Manzambi scored in first-half stoppage time. Spurs missed several chances before the break, and Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki made a string of saves to keep them out.
Villa took control after the interval. Nicolas Jackson added a clinical second, and Emiliano Buendía then struck a stunning third to put the result beyond doubt. Spurs had lost Pedro Porro to a hamstring injury in the first half, and they had no answer to Villa’s intensity in the second.
The hosts scored twice late on as Conor Gallagher’s scuffed effort took a deflection off Matty Cash for the goal that ended a scoreless run of 493 minutes in the league this season. Jan Paul van Hecke added a second, but it came too late.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side have now lost three of their opening five games and sit on two points. De Zerbi stormed down the tunnel at the final whistle, and Villa’s travelling fans taunted the Spurs boss with chants that he would be sacked in the morning.
The home loss means Tottenham Hotspur have lost 50 of their 141 Premier League games at home, as many defeats as Arsenal have suffered in 382 top-flight matches at the Emirates Stadium.
Spurs have won just five of their last 36 home league games, despite spending more than $430 million on new players this summer.
Emery had spoken warmly of Spurs before kick-off, saying he expected them to be in the top four, but his side left north London with the points. Villa move to four points, and both clubs now head into the international break.
