The relationship between FC Barcelona and their goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen has deteriorated severely, leading to swift disciplinary measures.
The club has stripped the 32-year-old German of the captain’s armband temporarily amid a deepening internal conflict.

Tensions flared earlier this summer when Barcelona contemplated selling Ter Stegen, much to the anger of the German shot-stopper. His decision to undergo back surgery, sidelining him for months, further complicated matters.
While his absence could ease Barcelona’s wage bill for La Liga’s registration requirements, Ter Stegen’s refusal to sign his medical report has stalled the process, frustrating the club.
On Wednesday, Barcelona issued a statement: “FC Barcelona announces that, following the opening of disciplinary proceedings against player Marc-André ter Stegen, and until those proceedings are definitively resolved, the Club […] has decided to temporarily remove the captaincy from the first-team player. Defender Ronald Araujo has been named the new first-team captain.”
This situation has the possibility to escalate even further, but the 32-year-old’s career in Barcelona is likely over, especially with the arrival of Joan Garcia as the new number 1.
