Barcelona, Lyon, and Juventus all recorded significant results as the UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage kicked off on Tuesday.

The opening round of fixtures produced high-scoring games, late drama, and a few early warning signs for the defending champions.

In London, Arsenal suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Lyon. Alessia Russo gave the Gunners a perfect start with a goal in the seventh minute, but two quickfire strikes from Melchie Dumornay before half-time turned the match on its head.

Despite enjoying more possession, Arsenal failed to convert their chances in the second half, as Lyon’s experience saw them through to an important away win. It was a frustrating start for Jonas Eidevall’s side, who now face a difficult path to regain control of their group.

Over in Spain, Barcelona delivered a statement performance, thrashing Bayern Munich 7-1 at the Estadi Johan Cruyff.

Alexia Putellas opened the scoring with a trademark curling finish before goals from Ewa Pajor, Esmee Brugts, Salma Paralluelo, and Clàudia Pina completed a commanding display.

Klara Bühl netted a consolation for Bayern, but the German side were outclassed throughout. The result underlined Barcelona’s intent to reclaim the continental crown.

In Turin, Juventus came from behind to edge Benfica 2-1. Lucia Alves had given the visitors the lead, but Cecilia Salvai scored twice to mark her 10th anniversary at the club in style. The Italian champions showed resilience and control in the second half, earning a hard-fought victory.

Elsewhere, Paris FC were held 2-2 at home by Belgian debutants OH Leuven. The hosts appeared to be cruising after first-half goals from Daphne Corboz and Clara Mateo, but Kim Everaerts and Sara Pusztai completed an impressive comeback for Leuven after the break.

The opening matchday showcased the growing competitiveness of the Women’s Champions League, with traditional powerhouses flexing their strength while emerging sides proved they can compete on Europe’s biggest stage.
