Brown Ideye is a former Nigerian footballer who played as a forward for the senior men’s national team, the Super Eagles. He grew the ranks and was part of the Super Eagles squad that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa. Ideye’s partnership with Emmanuel Emenike was instrumental as Nigeria won its third continental success, beating the likes of Cote D’Ivoire and Mali en route to the final triumph over Burkina Faso.
Ideye played in the forward position but wasn’t exactly a traditional center forward. He is the type of forward that makes defenders work tirelessly for the entire duration of the match as he helps in stretching defenses, winning fouls, running down the channels and half spaces, and creating goal opportunities for others.
This is not to say Brown Ideye didn’t know how to score; of course, he scored a lot of goals in his career, but he wasn’t as prolific as some of his predecessors. Instead, he is often remembered for his selflessness and hard work in and around the final third of the pitch.
The Bayelsa-born forward, like many of his contemporaries, started his career in the local league – the Nigeria Professional Football League before moving to Europe to play for a handful of clubs in England, Portugal, France, Spain, Greece, among others.

Arguably, Ideye’s most memorable spell in Europe was at Olympiacos, as he helped the Greek side win.
Ideye returned to the Nigeria Professional Football League before hanging up his boots, as he featured for the country’s most successful side, Enyimba, for a brief period. He scored a couple of goals for the Aba Elephants during his stint, but left the club on a rather sour note as he called out the nine-time champions over poor welfare.
Brown Ideye retired last month, but he is still involved with football as he currently works as the Director of Player Pathways and Partnerships at Atlantic Business Football Club. His transition into football management marked a new chapter in his career off the football pitch.
This post delves into Brown Ideye’s background, career, achievements, and net worth, among other information about the ex-Super Eagles forward.

Brown Ideye started his career in Europe with Neuchâtel Xamax in the Swiss Super League. Ideye had earlier gone on trial at Willem II in the Dutch Eredivisie but wasn’t signed. His time at the Swiss club was quite a success as he scored 23 goals in 56 matches in a three-year stint at the club.
Ideye went on to join Sochuax in the French Ligue 1 in the 2009/2010 season. His time at the French club was pretty decent as well, as he bagged 22 goals in 58 matches. His performances in the years at Neuchâtel Xamax and Sochuax didn’t go unnoticed, as he made a major move to Dynamo Kyiv in the Ukrainian League.
Dynamo Kyiv and Westbrom
Ideye signed a five-year contract with Ukrainian side Dynamo Kyiv on 6 July 2011. He made his debut on 16 July against Oleksandria and scored two goals. In his second match for Dynamo, Ideye also scored another brace against Obolon Kyiv. Marking a fiery start to life at the club. On 7 August 2012, Ideye scored the winning goal in the UEFA Champions League third-round qualifier against Feyenoord, helping Dynamo advance. He also scored in the second leg of the play-off round against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Although Mönchengladbach won 2–1, Dynamo secured a spot in the Champions League group stage with a 4–3 aggregate victory. On 15 May 2014, Dynamo left Ideye on the bench during their 2–1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Ukrainian Cup Final. Brown Ideye scored 45 goals in 107 matches and won two domestic titles in his three-year spell at the club.
West Bromwich Albion
On 18 July 2014, Ideye joined English Premier League club West Bromwich Albion on a three-year deal, becoming their record signing at a reported fee of £10 million. The contract included an optional fourth year. After a slow start in England, Ideye scored his first Premier League goal for West Brom in a 3–1 Boxing Day defeat to Manchester City. Brown Ideye went on a hot streak, scoring four goals in six days—one each against Burnley and Swansea City in the Premier League, and two against West Ham United in the FA Cup in February 2015.
Olympiacos, Tianjin Teda, and Malaga
Brown Ideye moved from West Brom to Olympiacos for a fee believed to be around €6 million on 31 August 2015. The opportunity to play in the Champions League again reportedly played a key role in his decision to join the Athens-based club. Ideye’s time at the Greek club remains arguably his best in Europe. The player, in a couple of interviews, admitted he was loved by the fans and the hierarchy of the club.
On 20 October 2015, Ideye delivered the winning goal in Olympiacos’ 1–0 Champions League group stage victory over Dinamo Zagreb, finishing superbly from a tight angle in the 79th minute to redeem an earlier miss.
On 9 March 2016, he turned down a lucrative offer from China during the January transfer window, choosing instead to remain with the reigning Superleague Greece champions. That summer, he helped Olympiacos celebrate its sixth consecutive domestic championship.
Brown Ideye, who had been offered an irresistible offer from China, eventually left Olympiacos and signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with Chinese Super League side Tianjin Teda in 2017. The club paid a €12 million transfer fee, and Ideye earned €3.5 million annually through the summer of 2019.
Even though he was earning good money at the Chinese club, his time at the club didn’t go as he would have wished. On 29 January 2018, Ideye joined Spanish La Liga club Málaga on a six-month loan.
Return to Greece
Brown Ideye signed a one-year deal with Aris on 20 June 2019, earning €500,000 for the season.
He scored his first goal of the season in mid-September, leading Aris to a stunning 4–0 home win over Panathinaikos. One week later, he converted a low cross from Giannis Fetfatzidis to open the scoring in a 2–2 away draw against PAOK in the Thessaloniki derby.
Brown Ideye scored a penalty to seal a 2–0 home win over Panetolikos. After serving a two-game suspension, he returned to the starting lineup on 14 December and scored in a 3–1 away loss to OFI. On 19 December, Ideye struck twice—after 12 and 25 minutes—to lead Aris to a dominant 4–0 win against Volos.

On 8 January 2020, he scored the lone goal in a 1–0 away win over Xanthi in the first leg of the Greek Cup round of 16. He added another goal in the second leg, helping Aris secure a 2–1 win and a spot in the quarterfinals. On 22 February, he netted an equalizer in a 2–2 away draw against Lamia. Six days later, he scored the only goal in a 3–1 away loss to Olympiacos during the Superleague championship play-offs.
Brown Ideye also had stints with Goetzepe in the Turkish Super League and Al-Yarmouk in the Kuwait League before returning to Nigeria.
Enyimba
Brown Ideye returned to Nigeria after over 20 years overseas and signed for Enyimba Football Club in 2024. Ideye joined the Aba Elephants on a deal running through the end of the 2024–25 season. He represented the club in the league and the CAF Confederation Cup. After his departure, he publicly criticized the club for neglecting player welfare and failing to pay promised bonuses.

He revealed that the standards of the club are quite underwhelming as it still owes salaries and pays its players a paltry sum of N7,000 AS feeding allowances during away league matches. Ideye called out the club for owing match bonuses over the course of the 2024/2025 season in a rant on his X page.
Ideye scored four goals in 10 matches across the league and the CAF Confederation Cup before he left the club at the end of the season.
Brown Ideye Super Eagles
Brown Ideye represented Nigeria at the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada, where he played five matches and scored a goal against Costa Rica. In May 2010, the national team included him in the provisional 30-man squad for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Although he didn’t make the final 23-man list, the team recalled him after Mikel John Obi suffered a knee injury and withdrew from the tournament.
In 2013, Nigeria named Ideye in their 23-man squad for the Africa Cup of Nations. He featured in most of the matches, scored the second goal in the 4–1 semi-final victory over Mali in Durban, and played in the final, helping Nigeria clinch a 1–0 win over Burkina Faso to lift the trophy at the FNB Stadium, otherwise known as Soccer City Stadium.

Later that year, Nigeria selected Ideye again—this time for the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, continuing his run as a key figure in the national setup.
Brown Ideye scored six goals in 28 matches for the Super Eagles between 2010 and 2016.
