Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday received a delegation from NBA Nigeria led by investor Tunde Folawiyo and former WNBA All-Star Chiney Ogwumike at the Lagos House, Marina.
The courtesy visit focused on strengthening collaboration between Lagos State and NBA Nigeria in basketball development, youth empowerment, and sports infrastructure.
Governor Sanwo-Olu described the meeting as “a partnership that goes far beyond the game,” noting that sports can serve as a powerful tool for social and economic progress.
He highlighted ongoing projects such as the construction of ten mini-stadia across the state, which will now include basketball courts to provide grassroots athletes with access to standard facilities. The governor commended NBA Nigeria for its roadmap to expand talent identification, coaching, and community programs.
Chiney Ogwumike, who is also an ESPN analyst, expressed excitement at being part of the initiative, calling it a homecoming and a chance to inspire the “Queens of the Continent.”
She praised Lagos for embracing basketball’s potential to empower the next generation, particularly young women.
NBA Nigeria’s delegation assured continued investment in grassroots programs and infrastructure, while the governor reaffirmed Lagos’s commitment to becoming a leading hub for sports development in Africa.
