SE Palmeiras became the first team to reach the quarter-finals of the revamped FIFA Club World Cup, defeating fellow Brazilians and Copa Libertadores champions Botafogo 1-0 after extra time in Philadelphia.

The last-16 clash had a derby vibe, only the second time two teams from the same nation met in CWC history. Heavy tackles flew early, with Palmeiras looking sharper.
Vitor Roque nearly latched onto Joaquín Piquerez’s pass, but chances were squandered. A cagey first half saw more yellow cards from referee François Letexier than goalmouth action.
After the break, Palmeiras’ Estêvão tested Botafogo’s John, but an offside call disallowed a goal. Botafogo’s Jefferson Savarino fired over, while John tipped Maurício’s header over.
Extra time saw substitute Paulinho score the decisive goal, turning past Marlon Freitas. Despite Gustavo Gómez’s late red card, Botafogo couldn’t respond.
Palmeiras advance to face the Benfica vs Chelsea winner, while Botafogo focus on defending their Série A title.
