Former Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan has expressed his disappointment and frustration towards his former teammates for not supporting him after he missed a crucial penalty at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Gyan, who is Ghana’s all-time top scorer, reflected on the incident during an Instagram Live session, stating:

“When the penalty miss happened, I was abused and called names because some people said I should have left it for someone else.”

He criticized his teammates for not taking responsibility and instead blaming him for the miss, saying:

“Why didn’t they step up to take it? They were afraid. Cowards. I will say it—they are cowards.”

Gyan also felt that he did not receive sufficient support from his teammates or the fans, adding:

“The fans can say what they want, but sometimes we need to educate them. Yet, nobody spoke up for me.”

The 39-year-old retired in 2023, leaving behind a remarkable legacy as Africa’s top scorer in World Cup history, with six goals.

However, the incident from 2010 continues to haunt him, even as he transitions into life after football.
