Chelsea Football Club has officially announced the signing of striker Liam Delap from Ipswich Town for a reported £30 million fee.
The 22-year-old forward has agreed to a six-year contract, committing his future to the Blues until 2031. Delap will inherit the club’s iconic No.9 jersey, a number that has been vacant since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s departure two years ago.
Delap’s move to Stamford Bridge reunites him with manager Enzo Maresca, under whom he previously worked during his time at Manchester City’s academy.
Maresca has expressed high praise for the young striker, stating, “Liam is a fantastic player for his age… he works hard on and off the ball, understands the game, and can score goals”.

During his debut Premier League season with Ipswich, Delap netted 12 goals in 37 appearances, showcasing his potential despite the team’s relegation.
His performances caught the attention of several top clubs, including Manchester United and Newcastle, but Chelsea’s qualification for the upcoming Champions League proved to be a decisive factor in his decision.
The No.9 shirt at Chelsea carries a storied history, having been worn by club legends like Didier Drogba and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.
However, it has also been associated with high-profile signings who struggled to make an impact, such as Fernando Torres and Romelu Lukaku. Delap aims to break this so-called “curse” and establish himself as a key figure in Chelsea’s attacking lineup.
His arrival is expected to bolster the Blues’ offensive options, providing competition for current forwards and adding depth ahead of a demanding season that includes domestic and European commitments.
Fans and pundits alike will be watching closely to see if Delap can rise to the occasion and become the prolific striker Chelsea has been seeking.
As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on Liam Delap to see if he can live up to the expectations that come with wearing Chelsea’s No.9 jersey.
