The road to the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup officially commenced for African nations as the qualification draw was conducted in Doha, Qatar, on May 13.
Sixteen teams now know their group-stage opponents as they vie for one of the continent’s five coveted spots in the global tournament set to be hosted by Qatar from August 27 to September 12, 2027.
The D’Tigers of Nigeria have been drawn in Group C alongside Rwanda, Guinea and Tunisia. The African qualifiers will unfold over two rounds between November 2025 and March 2027.
After missing out on the 2023 World Cup, Nigeria’s national team, D’Tigers, is determined to make a strong comeback.
Having secured qualification for AfroBasket 2025, the team aims to leverage this momentum in the World Cup qualifiers. Nigeria has previously qualified for the World Cup three times, with their best performance being a Round of 16 finish in 2006.
