Rafiu Durosinmi scored on his competitive debut for KRC Genk, but his side fell 2-1 away to Zulte Waregem in their 2026-27 Belgian Pro League opener. The Nigerian striker headed home a Junya Ito cross in the 39th minute to put Genk ahead.
Durosinmi was named Man of the Match, though the award offered little comfort. Genk led for long spells before conceding twice late on, as Marley Aké equalised in the 82nd minute and Serxho Ujka completed the turnaround four minutes later. Durosinmi was substituted in the 62nd minute after recording two shots, one on target.
Speaking to DAZN afterward, Durosinmi said he had dreamed of scoring on his debut since signing for Genk. He added that he would have preferred a win to properly celebrate the moment, and declined to single out any teammate for blame, saying everyone tried to take responsibility.
The striker was direct about his ambitions for the season, stating he wants to score goals, finish high in the scoring charts, and compete for the league’s top scorer title. He confirmed the Man of the Match trophy will find a place in his home, but stressed Genk’s response to the defeat matters more than his individual night.
The goal puts Durosinmi in pursuit of a mark set by fellow Nigerian Tolu Arokodare, who topped the 2024-25 Belgian Pro League scoring charts with 14 goals during his time at Genk. Durosinmi needs 13 more to match it, 14 to beat it. He joined Genk from Pisa in July after a prolific spell at Viktoria Plzeň, where he scored 35 goals in 86 appearances.
Durosinmi credited compatriot Paul Onuachu, who scored 85 goals in 134 Genk appearances, with encouraging him to make the move to Belgium.
