FIFA will introduce a new tradition at the 2026 FIFA World Cup by presenting championship rings to members of the winning team following Sunday’s final between Argentina and Spain at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
According to reports, 30 commemorative rings will be produced for the world champions, with each ring featuring a miniature World Cup trophy and a personalized engraving inside the band. In addition, FIFA will make 1,996 replica rings available for purchase by fans.
The concept mirrors the long-standing tradition in American sports, particularly the NFL, where Super Bowl winners receive championship rings to celebrate their title triumph.
United States President Donald Trump is expected to attend the final and will present the FIFA World Cup trophy to the champions. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed his attendance after FIFA President Gianni Infantino had earlier announced the president would be present.
Despite the World Cup being hosted in the United States, Trump has not attended any of the tournament’s previous 102 matches, including all of the USA’s games before their Round of 16 elimination to Belgium.
His relationship with Infantino has drawn attention during the tournament following reports that the US president contacted the FIFA president to seek a review of striker Folarin Balogun’s red card. FIFA’s subsequent decision to suspend Balogun’s automatic ban sparked criticism from several quarters, with concerns raised over the competition’s integrity. Balogun was cleared to play in the USA’s knockout match against Belgium, but the hosts suffered a 4-1 defeat.
Meanwhile, weather officials have issued an air quality warning in the New York area due to smoke from Canadian wildfires. However, there is currently no indication that conditions will affect the World Cup final at MetLife Stadium.
The highly anticipated showdown between defending champions Argentina and Spain will determine the winner of the first-ever FIFA World Cup rings, adding another historic chapter to football’s biggest tournament.
