Nigeria’s Flamingos are the new champions of the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup.
The Nigerian girls sealed a 2-1 win over Japan on Saturday evening to emerge as champions for the first time.
Awawu scored the opener in the 39th minute from a long-range effort after the Japanese goalkeeper spilled the ball into her net.
Oluebube Umejiaku doubled the lead two minutes into the second half to put the Flamingos in firm control of the final.
Japanese midfielder Fuki Ito reduced the deficit from a rebound 10 minutes before the end of regular time to ignite a comeback.
However, the Flamingos held on tight to the lead to the blast of the final whistle to emerge as the new FIFA Under-17 Women’s Champions.
The Flamingos made history by becoming the first African team to win the competition since its inception in 2008.
Nigeria also became the first African country to win both the FIFA Under-17 Men’s and Women’s World Cups.
