In a recent personal essay for The Players’ Tribune, Liverpool forward, Cody Gakpo has shared a profound experience that underscored his faith’s influence on his career trajectory.
He stated “One day, I was at my church back in Holland, and the pastor told me that he had a message for me from God. He said that I was going to go to Liverpool! I laughed and thought, ‘That sounds nice, but I don’t know about that.’ At the time, I was close to leaving PSV. I had a decision to make. But in the end, nothing happened.”
Gakpo further elaborated on his decision-making process during the summer of 2022, when he was contemplating moves to various clubs.
He stated: “I prayed and told God that if I scored one goal in the next game, I would go to Southampton. If I scored two, I would go to Leeds. Three goals would mean stay in Eindhoven. Then I scored two goals and got an assist. But the goal was later given to me, so I had three goals. I stayed.”
Reflecting on his decision to remain at PSV, Gakpo expressed gratitude, saying: “Thank God I stayed because that allowed me to play in the World Cup, which led to Liverpool.”
Since joining Liverpool, Gakpo has become an integral part of the team, contributing significantly to their Premier League campaign. His journey underscores the profound impact of faith and personal belief in shaping one’s career and life decisions.
