Lionel Messi bid an emotional farewell to playing competitive football in his home country, scoring two goals in Argentina’s 3-0 World Cup qualifying win over Venezuela.
While the captain signed off in style, he later cast doubt on his participation in the 2026 World Cup.
After the match, the Inter Miami star was asked about featuring in the tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
He admitted that, due to his age, his inclusion may be unlikely, but he remains motivated. “Because of my age, the most logical thing is that I won’t make it,” he said.
“But well, we’re almost there, so I’m excited and motivated to play it.”
Argentina has already qualified for the tournament, but Messi stated he has not made a definitive decision about his future on the international stage.
He says his choice will depend on his physical condition in the months leading up to the competition.
“Like I always say, I go day by day, going by how I feel. I’m trying to feel good and, above all, being honest with myself. When I feel good, I enjoy it, but when I don’t, honestly, I don’t have a good time, so I prefer not to be there if I don’t feel good. So we’ll see. I haven’t made a decision about the World Cup.”
