Nigerian striker, Victor Osimhen has shed light on his seamless transition to Turkish football giants Galatasaray, attributing his decision to the club’s vision and the influence of head coach Okan Buruk.
In a recent episode of ‘The Obi One Podcast’ hosted by former Nigerian international, John Obi Mikel, Osimhen detailed the factors that made joining Galatasaray an effortless choice.
Osimhen, who joined Galatasaray on loan from Napoli in September 2024, emphasized the pivotal role played by Buruk in his decision-making process.
He noted that their shared ambitions and the coach’s outlined project for the season resonated with his personal goals.
“When I spoke with the coach, he told me about the project and what the club had set for itself this season. I think we have the same mindset,” Osimhen remarked during the podcast.
The striker also expressed a deep connection to the club’s emblem, drawing parallels between the lion symbol and his personal journey.
“The symbol of the club is a lion, and I think I fall into this category in terms of the way I play and how I’ve survived through life’s journey. So for me, it was quite easy to accept this club,” he added.
Osimhen’s familiarity with Galatasaray was further enhanced by his relationships with former and current players.
He mentioned his close friendship with Dries Mertens and Henry Onyekuru, both of whom have had stints with the Turkish club. “I also watched their game because I’m very close to Dries. Even before I dreamed of coming here, I used to watch their game a lot,” Osimhen said.
Since his arrival, Osimhen has been in stellar form, netting 23 goals and providing five assists in 29 appearances across all competitions.
His contributions have been instrumental in propelling Galatasaray to the summit of the Turkish Super Lig, where they currently hold a seven-point lead over rivals Fenerbahçe.
Reflecting on his integration into the team, Osimhen acknowledged the support from the club and his teammates, which has facilitated his swift adaptation. “I think the club has helped me to adapt and to settle in well alongside my teammates,” he commented.
