Coventry City have completed the signing of Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest, adding the Super Eagles forward to their squad ahead of their return to the Premier League.
The newly promoted club officially announced the move on Monday, welcoming the 29-year-old forward with the message: “Welcome to the City, Taiwo.”
Awoniyi joins Coventry on a permanent transfer after four seasons at Nottingham Forest. He made 103 appearances for Forest, scoring 23 goals during his time at the City Ground.
The Nigerian became Forest’s then-record signing when he arrived from Union Berlin in 2022 for £17.2 million. However, competition for places limited his opportunities last season, with Awoniyi making just three Premier League starts and scoring four goals in 17 appearances across all competitions.
His move to Coventry gives the striker a fresh opportunity under manager Frank Lampard as the Sky Blues prepare for their first Premier League campaign in 25 years.
Awoniyi is also set to reunite with fellow Nigerian international Frank Onyeka, who joined Coventry following his successful loan spell with the club last season.
The transfer is understood to be worth around £9 million, according to reports, although other outlets had previously reported a figure closer to £17 million.
Coventry will begin their Premier League campaign against Arsenal on August 21, with Awoniyi now looking to make an immediate impact as the club begins life back in England’s top flight.
