Martin Odegaard: How can Mikel Arteta replace injured Arsenal captain?

Martin Odegaard picked up an injury on international duty with Norway which presents Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta with a midfield conundrum ahead of the crucial north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur.

The absence of Odegaard, Mikel Merino, and Declan Rice has left Arsenal severely depleted in midfield. So, how can Arteta adapt?

Kai Havertz to replace Odegaard

Arteta may be tempted to utilize Havertz in midfield, given his experience in the role, despite Havertz’s excellence as a center forward. Despite starting his Arsenal career in midfield, a shift to the centre-forward position led to the German international producing his best form. At the start of the 2024/25 season, while playing as a number nine, that fine form has continued with Havertz having bagged himself three goal contributions in three appearances.

Try Oleksandr Zinchenko in midfield

Zinchenko’s versatility is a valuable asset, and his ability to play in midfield could be crucial in replacing the injured Odegaard. He’s more comfortable on the ball and has a talent for switching play quickly, which could maintain Arsenal’s attacking momentum. It is probably best to use him in an advanced position considering his defensive frailties.

Sign Adrien Rabiot

If Arteta doesn’t fancy the above options, he may need to explore the free agent market. Rabiot, a France international and former Juventus midfielder, has been without a club since June.

While he hasn’t been at his best over the past 12 months, Arsenal’s desperation might lead them to offer him a chance in the Premier League.

Each option has its pros and cons, but Arteta must act swiftly to address the midfield void and ensure his team remains competitive in the coming weeks. There are big games on the horizon. in the league and Champions League.

Arteta must find solutions to replace Odegaard, who will be a big miss.
