Nigeria falls to Norway in U20 World Cup opener

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles began their FIFA U20 World Cup campaign with a frustrating 1-0 defeat to Norway in Talca on Saturday, despite dominating much of the contest.

The decisive moment came in the opening minutes when Norway were awarded a penalty following a handball, confirmed through the new video review system being trialled at the tournament. Rasmus Holten converted calmly from the spot to give the Scandinavians an early advantage.

From then on, Nigeria controlled possession and pressed relentlessly, creating numerous chances but failing to apply the finishing touch. The Flying Eagles registered 20 shots compared to Norway’s five and enjoyed nearly two-thirds of the ball, yet could not find a way past a resolute Norwegian defence.

Nigeria also saw two penalty appeals turned down in the second half, both after video review, adding to their frustrations. Bookings for Daniel Daga and Isaac Ayuma in the first half further complicated matters, with the team forced to manage their aggression carefully.

The result leaves Nigeria under early pressure in Group F, with crucial fixtures still to come against Saudi Arabia and Colombia.

For now, it is a case of missed opportunities and hard lessons for Nigeria, who know that efficiency in front of goal will be decisive if they are to progress beyond the group stage.
