Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have been handsomely rewarded by the Federal Government following their historic triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament in Abidjan, where they defeated Mali 78–64 in the final to secure their fifth consecutive continental title.
At a special reception held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, announced that each member of the victorious team would receive $100,000 and a three-bedroom apartment under the Renewed Hope Housing Scheme.
In addition, the players were conferred with the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), in recognition of their exceptional achievement and contribution to Nigerian sports.
The coaching staff were also honoured, with each coach receiving $50,000 and a three-bedroom apartment, along with the OON award. The gesture drew wide praise from sports enthusiasts and stakeholders across the country, as a significant show of support for women’s sports.
D’Tigress, under the leadership of head coach Rena Wakama, have now won seven AfroBasket titles in total and remain unbeaten in the competition since 2015.
Their latest success has cemented their status as Africa’s most dominant women’s basketball team. President Tinubu commended the team’s discipline, teamwork and resilience, describing them as role models and national ambassadors who have brought great pride to the nation.
