Rivers United have returned to the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League after defeating Kwara United in Port Harcourt on Sunday.

The Finidi George-led side came from a goal down to secure a 2-1 win over the visitors at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.

Kwara United took the lead against the run of play on the 18th minute courtesy of Akeem Akani’s goal.

The midfielder planted a fine header into the back of the net form a cross to give the visitors the lead.

Rivers United dominated proceedings for most part of the half but failed to create a clear-cut chance.

However, the home side found the breakthrough a few minutes into the second half as Timothy Zachariah restored parity.

The forward had the last touch from a goal-mouth scramble to equalize for the Pride of Rivers.

Moments later, Timothy Zachariah provided the assist for David Benjamin’ goal to put the home side ahead in the match.

The home side scored a third goal late in the game but it was ruled for offside as the match ended 2-1.

Rivers United are now back on top of the log with 22 points after 17 matches.

The Pride of Rivers are closely followed by Remo Stars with 30 points. The Sky Blue Stars played out a one-all draw away at Ikorodu City in the Southwest Derby.

In other results, Enugu Rangers kept a clean sheet and picked a point at Katsina United while Bayelsa United secured a 2-1 win over Akwa United.
