Rivers United brush Bendel aside, Shooting Stars shut down as Enyimba drop to relegation zone
Rivers United put out a solid second-half performance to secure consecutive home wins within four days.
Finidi George’s men came into Sunday’s match against Bendel Insurance on the back of a 3-0 win over El Kanemi Warriors on Wednesday.
However, the Pride of Rivers were made to work hard for their win as the visitors held out for a goalless first half.
However, the second half was the opposite of the first as both sides shared four goals at the end of 90 minutes.
Veteran forward, Victor Mbaoma put the host ahead with a header off a corner kick by Iyowuna Douglas in the 53rd minute.
With 19 minutes left on the clock, Wisdom Samuel doubled the lead with a shot down the bottom corner.
Bendel Insurance reduced the deficit in the 89th minute but Samson Obi scored a minute later to restore the two-goal advantage.
Rivers United remain on top of the Nigeria Premier Football League with 52 points – two more than Enugu Rangers in second place.
Shooting Stars’ poor run of form on the road continues as the Oluyole Warriors suffered yet another loss.
Abia Warriors kept a clean sheet and picked up maximum points with a 2-0 win at the Umuahia Stadium.
Chukwuemeka Obioma’s brace – a goal in each half gave the host the win as they move into fourth spot with 46 points.
Enugu Rangers had the most emphatic win on Sunday evening with a 4-1 demolition of reigning champions Remo Stars.
Kenneth Igboke scored twice, Wisdom Ebirim and Chidozie also got in the score sheet as the Flying Antelopes stay in second behind Rivers United.
Meanwhile, nine-time champions, Enyimba have dropped to the relegation zone after losing to Waari Wolves.
The “Wolves” had the “Elephants” for dinner with 2-1 win.
The loss dragged the Aba Elephants to 17th on the log with 33 points from 29 matches.
