Rivers United Football Club has confirmed that its team contingent was involved in a road traffic accident on Thursday while traveling to Awka, Anambra State, for their President Federation Cup Round of 16 encounter against Nasarawa United.
According to an official statement released by the club, the incident occurred along the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road on the outskirts of Port Harcourt shortly after the team departed from its camp.
The club disclosed that several players and officials sustained minor injuries in the accident. However, there were no fatalities or life-threatening injuries recorded.
“All affected individuals are currently receiving appropriate medical attention and are in stable condition,” the club stated.
Rivers United assured supporters that the safety and well-being of its players and officials remain the club’s top priority. The club’s medical team is closely monitoring those involved, while management continues to assess the situation and make necessary arrangements.
The Nigeria Premier Football League side also expressed gratitude to fans, partners, and members of the football community for their concern, prayers, and support following the incident.
The accident comes just hours before Rivers United’s scheduled President Federation Cup Round of 16 fixture against Nasarawa United in Awka. The club stated that further information regarding the team’s travel plans and the status of the match will be communicated in due course.
