Supporters of Romania’s national team drew global attention during their World Cup qualifier against Austria after displaying a large banner with the message “Defend Nigerian Christians.”
The banner appeared in the stands at the National Stadium in Bucharest during the October 12 World Cup qualifier against Austria. Spectators nearby applauded as it was unfurled, and images of the message quickly circulated online.
The gesture comes amid ongoing reports of violence affecting Christian communities in parts of Nigeria, particularly in regions facing attacks by armed groups. Reactions on social media were immediate and divided.
Some Nigerians welcomed the show of solidarity, while others questioned whether a football match was the right setting for such a political and religious statement.
Neither the Romanian Football Federation nor match organisers have issued a comment on the banner. The Nigerian government has also not responded publicly.
