Samuel Chukwueze produced one of his most complete performances in Rossoneri colours as AC Milan swept aside Manchester United 4-2 in their pre-season finale at the Tarczyński Arena in Wrocław, Poland, on Saturday.
The Nigeria international was directly involved in three of Milan’s four goals, capping a difficult pre-season under new manager Ruben Amorim with a display that will encourage the club’s coaching staff ahead of their Serie A opener against Torino.
Manchester United made the perfect start when Harry Maguire rose highest to head home Bruno Fernandes’ inswinging corner inside the opening two minutes, giving Michael Carrick’s side an early cushion in the Polish city of Wrocław.
Milan responded before the interval through Chukwueze, who capitalised on a moment of magic from Gonçalo Ramos. The Portuguese forward, Milan’s record signing this summer, stepped into the box and slipped a no-look pass into the path of the Nigerian, who slid the ball into an empty net to restore parity heading into the break.
Bruno Fernandes missed the chance to put Manchester United back ahead as he missed a penalty after Youri Tielemans was brought down in the box a few minutes after the equaliser.
Patrick Dorgu put United back in front early in the second half after Filippo Terracciano’s stray backpass gifted the visitors possession in a dangerous area, but Milan hit back within minutes.
Chukwueze turned provider this time, driving into space down the right flank before squaring the ball for Amadou Cissé to convert from close range and level the contest at 2-2.
Milan continued to grow into the game from there, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek adding a fourth as the Rossoneri pulled clear to seal the 4-2 win, rounding off a productive afternoon for Amorim’s side after a winless run through the rest of pre-season.
The victory offers Milan a timely confidence boost following back-to-back draws against Inter Milan and Celtic, and a heavy defeat to Chelsea, while Chukwueze’s contribution will further stake his claim for regular minutes as the new campaign gets underway.
