Super Eagles boss Eric Chelle risks FIFA ban after ‘voodoo’ comments

Super Eagles Head Coach Eric Chelle is at risk of severe disciplinary action from FIFA following his controversial comments made after Nigeria’s heartbreaking loss to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the 2026 World Cup playoff final on Sunday.

The dramatic match ended 1-1 after 120 minutes, with the Leopards ultimately winning the penalty shootout 4-3, shattering Nigeria’s World Cup dreams.

During the penalty proceedings, the Malian tactician became highly agitated, claiming that individuals in the opposing DR Congo technical area were using “voodoo.” Chelle had to be physically restrained by members of his own coaching staff due to his erratic behavior.

Although Chelle has since apologized for his actions, attributing the outburst to high emotions immediately following the defeat, the matter is unlikely to end there.

Osasu Obayiuwana, a former member of FIFA’s anti-racism task force, weighed in on the issue via X, stating: “After @FIFAcom look at this, I fear that Eric Chelle, the @NGSuperEagles head coach, will be severely punished for this act of madness – a heavy fine and/or a touchline or stadium ban.”

The potential sanction could have a significant impact on Nigeria’s upcoming tournament campaign, with Obayiuwana warning that the coach could end up “missing two-thirds of Nigeria’s AFCON group games.” FIFA regulations strictly prohibit statements that bring the game into disrepute or include superstitious accusations against opponents.
