Taiwo Awoniyi scored his first goal for Coventry City as the Sky Blues beat Plymouth Argyle 4-2 in the second round of the Carabao Cup at Home Park. Awoniyi made his first start for the club after joining from Nottingham Forest last week, and he wasted no time making an impact.
Awoniyi opened the scoring in the third minute. Caleb Yirenkyi flicked on Liam Kitching’s through ball, and Awoniyi ran onto it before beating goalkeeper James Storer with a side-footed finish from the left side of the box. Two minutes later, Awoniyi turned provider, setting up Jack Rudoni to double Coventry’s lead with a finish from the edge of the box.
Plymouth responded and pulled level at 2-2 early in the second half. Danny Irow scored on his debut in the 21st minute, cutting in from the left and beating the Coventry defense before finding the far corner. Xavier Amaechi added Plymouth’s second nine minutes into the second half to complete the comeback.
Coventry regained control soon after. Ephron Mason-Clark scored within five minutes of coming on as a 62nd-minute substitute, restoring the Sky Blues’ lead. Victor Torp then converted a penalty in the 78th minute to seal the 4-2 win and send Coventry through to the third round.
Awoniyi played 70 minutes before making way for fellow new signing Sidiki Cherif. The goal and assist mark his first involvement in Coventry colors after making a substitute appearance in the club’s 3-0 Premier League defeat at Arsenal.
The result sends Coventry through to the third round of the Carabao Cup, continuing their opening weeks in English football’s second tier of cup competition following their return to the Premier League.
