Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, aged 30 died on Tuesday, a day after he collapsed following a collision with an opposing goalkeeper in a Spanish second-division match.
The Segunda Division club announced his death on Tuesday morning in a statement that said it felt “broken with pain.” Tenerife added that nothing could ease the sadness and that “There are no words of comfort.”
The collision happened on Monday at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López, seven minutes into stoppage time of a 2-2 draw with Andorra in La Liga 2. De Miguel had come on as a substitute in the 59th minute, when Tenerife led 2-0.
Tenerife’s defence cleared the ball from their penalty area, and it bounced toward midfield. Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono rushed out to challenge De Miguel, and his knee appeared to strike the forward in the chest and the referee immediately showed Owono a red card.
Players frantically waved medical staff onto the pitch to treat De Miguel, and officials abandoned the match soon afterwards while players wept.
MARCA reported that De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest in the ambulance on the way to the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz, where doctors admitted him to intensive care.
De Miguel was born in Madrid and made his senior debut in 2015 with Leganés B and went on to play for eight other clubs in Spain. He made his professional debut with Castellón in August 2024 at 27, and he scored 16 goals as that side won promotion to the second division in the 2023-24 season.
Tenerife signed him on a three-year deal in 2025. The club said it stands with his devastated family and loved ones, and with the people of Tenerife who mourn his death.
