‘They thought it was Real Madrid’ – Reactions as Chelsea humble PSG to win Club World Cup

In a commanding performance that stunned the football world, Chelsea annihilated Paris Saint-Germain 3–0 in the Club World Cup final, securing their second title in the revamped tournament format.

Cole Palmer was the protagonist, notching a brace before setting up the third. He broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute after capitalizing on a defensive error by Nuno Mendes, then added his second with a beautifully placed strike around the half-hour mark.

Before halftime, Palmer threaded a defense-splitting pass to João Pedro, who coolly chipped over Gianluigi Donnarumma — sealing the comprehensive lead.

Chelsea’s defensive line, marshalled by Robert Sánchez, absorbed PSG’s pressure in the second half. Sánchez’s vital saves including a sharp stop from Ousmane Dembélé ensured Chelsea maintained clean-sheet status.

PSG’s frustration boiled over in the final moments. Joao Neves was sent off for pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair, while post-match tensions escalated into a pitchside clash.

Enzo Maresca, Chelsea’s architect, expressed pride in his squad’s intensity: “The players deserve it. We set the tempo… I’m very excited that we have won here.” He also hinted at a celebratory break before pre-season resumes.

Man of the match Cole Palmer added: “It’s a great feeling, even better because everyone doubted us before the game. PSG are a great team. I like finals. [Maresca] is building something special.”

Supporters couldn’t contain their excitement:

“Temperature update from MetLife Stadium: currently below freezing thanks to Dr Palmer handing out cold‑blooded goals like flu shots.”

“They thought it’s Real Madrid” after witnessing Chelsea’s ruthless display.

Analysts noted the result as a tactical masterclass and brandished it as a defining half in Chelsea’s resurgence.

Chelsea’s dominance caps off a meteoric rise under Maresca. Already boasting Conference League and top‐four Premier League finishes last season, this Club World Cup win solidifies their return as a global football power.
