Three Things to Watch as Nigeria Face Russia

Super Eagles

The Super Eagles will look to put their disappointing defeat to Guinea-Bissau behind them when they take on Russia in an international friendly at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium on Tuesday.

Kick-off is scheduled for 5pm Nigerian time, with Éric Chelle’s side facing another demanding test just days after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Although Tuesday’s fixture is non-competitive, it presents Chelle with an opportunity to assess his reshaped squad, restore confidence and address some of the concerns exposed in Bissau.

With several established players unavailable, there will be plenty to watch when the Super Eagles face a Russian side that arrives in strong form.

Here are three key storylines to follow.

1. Can Nigeria produce a reaction?

The biggest question will be how the Super Eagles respond to their heavy defeat in Guinea-Bissau.

Nigeria struggled for intensity and defensive organisation in the qualifier, conceding three goals in a performance that left little for the travelling supporters to celebrate.

Chelle accepted responsibility for the result while pointing to the difficult playing surface, but the defeat has increased the importance of producing a positive response in Nizhny Novgorod.

With several regulars missing, the French coach has been forced to work with a more experimental squad. That could provide an opportunity for fringe players to stake their claim while giving Chelle a clearer picture of the options available to him.

Greater intensity, improved defensive organisation and quicker transitions will be among the key areas to watch.

Another passive display would raise further questions ahead of Nigeria’s November AFCON qualifying double-header against Tanzania.

2. How will Nigeria cope with Russia’s attacking threat?

Russia head into the friendly with considerable attacking momentum.

Valery Karpin’s team have won their last four matches, including impressive victories over Iran and Namibia. They defeated Iran 2-0 before producing a dominant 6-0 victory over Namibia, scoring eight goals without conceding in their last two outings.

Their attack has also offered variety, with players such as Konstantin Tyukavin and Lechi Sadulaev providing pace, movement and a clinical edge in the final third.

That represents a significant test for a Nigerian defence that was exposed repeatedly against Guinea-Bissau.

The Super Eagles will need to be more compact without the ball, limit the space between their defensive and midfield lines and deal effectively with Russia’s movement around the penalty area.

Stopping the hosts from turning possession into dangerous transitions will also be crucial.

3. Iheanacho’s return and Nigeria’s search for goals

With Victor Osimhen and several other attacking options unavailable, Kelechi Iheanacho’s return to the squad takes on added importance.

The experienced forward provides Chelle with another option in attack and could be central to Nigeria’s efforts to find a cutting edge against a Russian side that has kept clean sheets in its last two matches.

Much will depend on how Chelle chooses to use him.

Iheanacho could operate as the central striker or form a partnership with Akor Adams, giving Nigeria a combination of experience, movement and physical presence in the final third.

Against an organised Russian defence, however, the Super Eagles will need more than possession. They must turn their opportunities into clear chances and, ultimately, goals.

Nigeria’s previous meeting with Russia ended in a 1-1 draw in Moscow in June 2025, demonstrating that the Super Eagles are capable of competing with the hosts.
