Manchester United suffered a disappointing Carabao Cup exit on Wednesday, blowing a two-goal lead at Old Trafford as Brighton & Hove Albion fought back to win 3-2 and reach the fourth round.
United started the game on a fantastic note with Shea Lacey curling home Youri Tielemans’ pass in the eighth minute before Mason Mount doubled the lead two minutes later to put the hosts firmly in control.
Brighton pulled one back deep into first-half stoppage time when Charalampos Kostoulas converted a Jacob Hadjam assist, sending the sides in at 2-1 and giving the visitors hope.
The turnaround was completed in the second half. Pascal Gross levelled in the 65th minute after Luka Vuskovic’s assist, and Maxim De Cuyper struck four minutes later to put Brighton ahead for the first time, a lead they held onto for the win.
The loss comes just days after the Red Devils suffered a controversial loss to their city rivals on Sunday at the same venue.
Elsewhere, Everton beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, with Carlos Alcaraz scoring the only goal to send the Toffees into the fourth round.
Coventry City hosted Aston Villa in an all-Midlands derby, with the visitors running out 3-1 winners to book their place in the next round.
League One side Fleetwood Town provided the night’s giant-killing scare, edging past Sheffield United 1-0 to complete a memorable night’s work.
