Valverde’s hat trick sinks City, PSG rolls over Chelsea, and Arsenal escapes defeat at Leverkusen

It was a night to forget for English teams across different match centres of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 first leg.

Fede Valverde dished out his best performance yet in the colours of Real Madrid on Wednesday night to put the 15-time champions in pole position to qualify for the last eight at the expense of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

Valverde scored his first career hat trick as Real Madrid breezed past Manchester City at the Santiago Bernabeu with a 3-0 win.

The Uruguayan midfielder sealed a first-half hat trick to give Real Madrid a huge advantage going into the second leg next week in Manchester.

PSG dismantled Chelsea in Paris

Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain outclassed Chelsea to take a one-step closer to reaching the last eight of the competition.

It was a goals-fest at the Parc Des Princes as Luis Enrique’s men sealed a 5-2 win over Liam Rosenoir’s Chelsea.

Kvicha Kvaratskhelia came off the bench to bag a brace in the second half after Vitinha put PSG 3-2 ahead.

Chelsea equalised twice on the night courtesy of Malo Gusto and Enzo Fernandez. Still, the champions showed superiority in attack to seal a three-goal advantage victory ahead of the second leg in London next week.

Meanwhile, Kai Havertz came off the bench to rescue a sloppy Arsenal from the jaws of defeat against Bayer Leverkusen at the Bay Arena.

Havertz converted a late penalty against his former team after Noni Madueke was brought down in the box.

The result leaves both teams with an equal chance of progressing into the quarter-finals of the competition.

Bodo/Glimt’s dream run is still on as the Norwegians dismantled Sporting Lisbon with ease on a very cold night at the Aspmyra Stadium in Bodo.

The Norwegian side drew first blood in the first-ever meeting between both sides with a 3-0 win.

Kasper High scored his sixth goal of the competition while Sondre Fet and Ole Blomberg scored their fourth and second goals respectively to get Bodo/Glimt close to a historic quarter-finals appearance
