Super Falcons captain, Rasheedat Ajibade has declared her intent to lead Nigeria to glory at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, insisting she feels calm and focused despite the weight of expectation that comes with the captain’s armband.
Ajibade, who previously lifted the WAFCON trophy in 2018 and emerged top scorer at the 2022 edition, is among a select group of five experienced players in the current squad who have tasted continental triumph. She joins seasoned names like Osinachi Ohale, Francisca Ordega, Asisat Oshoala, and Chiamaka Nnadozie in chasing yet another title.
Now returning to Morocco in a new role as team leader, the dynamic forward is eager to guide the Super Falcons to another historic success.
“It’s always special coming back to Morocco for this competition — it’s the biggest stage for African women’s football, and I’m motivated more than ever,” she said. “Our goal is clear, we’re here to win.”
Describing the captaincy as a defining moment in her career, the former Atlético Madrid forward called it a “tremendous honour” to lead the team.
“Wearing the captain’s armband is a big deal for me. I appreciate the responsibility, but honestly, I don’t feel under pressure,” Ajibade noted.
She emphasized her composed mindset, explaining that she’s developed the ability to manage expectations and turn challenges into opportunities for growth — both for herself and her teammates.
Nigeria’s campaign begins on Sunday, July 6, with a Group B opener against Tunisia. The nine-time champions will then face Botswana on July 10 before wrapping up the group stage against Algeria on July 13.
