Lamine Yamal has been named Young Sportsman of the Year at the Laureus World Sports Awards, capping another remarkable milestone in the teenager’s rapid rise to global prominence.

The 2026 ceremony, held in Madrid, brought together some of the biggest names in world sport, with Yamal recognised among a list of elite winners that included Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka, who claimed the top male and female honours respectively.

Yamal’s award marks the introduction of a new Laureus category focused on athletes under 21, with the Barcelona forward emerging as its first-ever recipient after an outstanding year at both club and international level.

The 18-year-old played a central role in FC Barcelona’s dominating campaign last season, helping the club secure the league title, Copa del Rey, and Spanish Super Cup. His individual achievements have been just as notable, including record-breaking performances and a runner-up finish in the Ballon d’Or voting at a historically young age.

Monday’s recognition adds to an already growing list of accolades. Yamal had previously been named Laureus Breakthrough of the Year in 2025, making him the youngest athlete to win two Laureus awards.

Speaking after receiving the award, the Spain international expressed gratitude to his family, teammates, and coaches, while also acknowledging the influence of Lionel Messi, whom he described as a major inspiration in his career.

”I am very happy to be the first to receive this award for the best young athlete. It’s a source of pride,” he said.

”I wanted to thank the Academy, all the legends who have voted for me, my two brothers, Jorge, who has always accompanied me and my team, my mother, my father, my grandmother, all my colleagues and the staff.

“Receiving this prestigious award, the Laureus, is very special for me,” he added. “When you realize that an athlete isn’t just a legend in their sport but in all others, it’s because they’re the best. Messi is a prime example. He’s the best footballer in history and also the best athlete. For me, he’s not just another idol. Everyone respects him for everything he has done, I hope I can follow in his footsteps.”

Beyond individual success, Yamal’s recognition reflects his growing impact on the global game. Still in his teens, he has already become a key figure for both club and country, earning praise not just for his performances, but for his composure and consistency on football’s biggest stages.

The Laureus World Sports Awards, often described as the “Oscars of sport,” are decided by a panel of sporting legends and celebrate excellence across multiple disciplines.
